We see how traditional dishes are made by the Swazis, Sothos and Tswanas and visit an Afrikaner farm where delicacies and traditions dating back to the Voortrekkers have lived on, while the Cape Malays and Indians share with us their colourful lifestyles. South africa's undiscovered gem - the Western Cape. In spring this hauntingly beautiful area explodes into a kaleidoscope of brilliant flowers. Here, too, are 5 million year old fossils that lie in-situ for all to see. This proverbial garden of eden is the legendary home of Eve - her 117 000 year old footprint has been found alongside the Langebaan Lagoon. This was also the home of the San people who left their paintings on the walls of caves throughout the Cedarberg, a range of mountains where nature has over the aeons carved monumental sandstone sculptures. It's also an area that inspired Louis Leipoldt, the well known South African poet who lies buried in a cave in his beloved mountains.

Seaside caves with middens of inhabitants who lived there more than 120,000 years ago; a subterranean fairyland 5km below the earth; legendary castles, elephants, shipwrecks and ghosts are all part of the deep gorges, high cliffs and forests of giant yellowoods, it's also a location that is becoming increasingly popular with those seeking the thrill of bungee jumping, white water rafting, absailing and gliding through ancient forests on a tree top slide.

The Great Karoo - or land of thirst - is a vast area in the heartland of South Africa. A haunting, biblical landscape that seems to sweep on forever. It's an area of intense beauty and infinite variety - one of the world's great natural wonders. It's also a part of South Africa least touched by the passing of time - offering the traveller an encounter with a rich tapestry of people and places - a world that existed more than 200 million years ago.

The words of the first Governor of the Cape, Jan Van Riebeeck, when he planted his very first vines, echo down the years to us. "today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape Grapes." Since then the Cape's wine industry has steadily grown in size and reputation so that Cape wines are sought after and savoured throughout the world, and each year hundreds of thousands of visitors pour into this region with its Mediterranean climate, to share in the Wine Route experience which stretches from the Constantine Valley behind Table Mountain to Stellenbosch in the Eersterivier Valley and over the Hellshoogte Mountains to Franschhoek or "French Corner".

The Garden Route – a narrow strip of coastal plain in the southern Cape – has the largest expanse of indigenous forest in the country. Here in nature’s primeval garden are 800 year old giant yellowwoods, spectacular jagged cliffs, colourful varieties of fynbos and golden sunny beaches.
